Listen to Elton John, Billy Joel, Bruno Mars or Coldplay and you’ll hear 3rds and 6ths everywhere. These two intervals are a go-to sound for pop pianists because they’re warm and melodic and they sound great. But playing them well takes more than knowing the intervals. There are specific ways to use 3rds and 6ths to build a compelling solo, and this course shows you how.

You’ll begin with a quick review of pop chords (skip ahead if you already know them), then learn the essentials of 3rds and 6ths. You’ll work through key exercises, apply the intervals to different chord progressions, and learn how to mix 3rds and 6ths together for more variety and movement.

This course includes downloadable sheet music and backing tracks, so you can take notes, practice along and hear how your solos sound in context. By the end, you’ll be able to create great-sounding pop lines with one of the most versatile techniques in the style.
