Jonny is an encourager, and it makes my heart glow to hear him teach. I just joined the platform a week or two ago, and Johnny suggested we try this month's challenge during the new member meeting. I'm not particularly interested in holiday music, but this arrangement is really fun - and putting it to a song I already know makes it easier to focus on the new concepts.

As always PwJ breaks it all down into small pieces which allows you to focus on each piece one at a time and when you’re ready you put it all together, just don’t get impatient and jump ahead before you are ready.

I’ve really enjoyed the Quartal Voicings in particular and John Proulx’s approach. The voicings are so rich and the theory is reviewed while playing the arranged tunes. It is also fun to play along with the instructors 🙌🎶🎹

Thank you so much, Jonny - you always groove like crazy, and I really appreciate how well you teach. You make it so easy to understand. I remember being so impressed when I heard you play at Disneyland many years ago. I couldn’t believe how this young kid could play so well, and in so many styles, and sound so musically mature and play with such total mastery. This is my review on the course of Diminished & Half Diminished Chords. "Feel like skipping? Don't! Because the nature of this course is in some ways repetitive, you may be tempted to skip a lesson because it would be similar to the previous one. And, yes, it is similar. BUT... Jonny always offers different patterns and perspectives and insights that may not necessarily be in the other lessons. Some of the options he offers are extremely advanced but if you want to be the best player you can be, you may wish to incorporate those into your practice. I started using different accompaniment rhythms on my keyboard (instead of the metronome) to keep it entertaining and fresh."

I’ve just finished the ‘Improvise Jazz Piano with the Dominant Diminished Scale’.
Wow what a course! The first 2 are some of my favourite things as well Jonny (dogs and coffee!) and the 3rd (diminished scales) will hopefully soon become one of my favourite things too!! Really enjoyed this course and hoping to nail those diminished scales too in my soloing!

Very well designed. Its starts out and you think this is hard to keep up with, then it starts to feel easier. So you move to the next part/step in the progress and you think "This is hard " and with practice.... I will keep coming back to this piece as a warm up and its great at helping you understand inversions.

Before I took the 10-Day Blues Challenge I had been self learning for three years with good progress. But I didn’t know the C blues scale. This took me from blues beginner and showed me a clear path to blues proficiency. I still have a lot of work to do but now I have a roadmap and I’m seeing great progress.

I completed my first course since starting with PWJ a few weeks ago. Comparing PWJ to other online courses I've taken is like comparing an elementary school lesson to a higher education level, with PWJ being more advanced. There is a saying that one eats an elephant one bite at a time. I wasn't convinced I would succeed initially because, as I write this, I've been a piano player for less than one year. At first, the song seemed busy, and I found the flicks intimidating. I've never played a jazz song before. However, I was drawn in and enjoyed the heck out of practicing. Each lesson video breaks things down into small pieces, allowing me to do one thing at a time. After I completed a lesson, I felt a great sense of accomplishment because I picked up skills I didn't have before. Eventually, the outcome was great. I watched the lesson videos repeatedly, and I'm not sure I would have gotten through them without the ability to rewatch them. As mentioned, I am a newbie to piano and music theory. The lead sheet PDFs were very helpful. I've been working on learning more about music notation, so as I progressed through the course, I started recognizing the notes on the staff. Granted, they are repeated repeatedly, but I realized that part of my overall goal to play the piano has evolved to include learning to read music. Overall, I think the course is excellent. Everything is broken into small pieces, which helped me gain confidence and inspired me to keep going

Piano With Jonny offers three core content types:

Courses

Courses are comprised of lessons and are based on selected styles of music and learning focus topics. PWJ offers regular courses, workshops which include teacher interaction, and challenges which are divided into a 4 week learning format.

Lessons

Lessons are combined into courses. Most lessons build upon concepts of the previous lesson, with the exception of Quick Tips which stand alone.

Smartsheets

Smartsheets use the Soundslice sheet music player to give students digital access to all arrangements and lesson sheet music.
