Normally I send you Quick Tips on Friday, but I felt like I just had to send you this video today.
I don’t normally get very “emotional” about the comments, but after I posted the last video, I was pretty bothered.
I’m talking about Friday’s video, “How I Can Play Almost Anything On the Piano“…
I got some amazing comments, and many people said how helpful the video was.
But then, I started seeing comments like this:
And I couldn’t help but feel sad and little angry.
Sad that students like this would buy into the false belief that they can’t train their ear.
And angry that they would spread a lie that plagues so many students.
It’s a lie that “only the gifted pianists, born with a special talent, can play by ear”.
The lie that it cannot be taught.
The lie that you are wasting your time even trying to learn it.
Comments like this undermine the efforts of so many students working hard to improve their ear, and essentially say “give up… it’s useless”.
I couldn’t not respond.
So I made this video… for you. It’s a punch back to the lies that cast self-doubt in so many students.
If you watch any “piano lesson” video this week, this might be the most important thing for you to see.
I know that the journey of learning the piano is hard.
I know that you probably feel frustrated often and want to quit at times.
But winners listen to winners.
And losers listen to losers.
You don’t need one more self-defeating voice in the ring with you.
Don’t let them shake you. Don’t quit.
You can do this. I believe you will do it.
