Have you ever heard Post Malone’s pianist play solo piano?
His name is David Crutcher, and I could honestly watch a whole concert of just him. Funk, gospel, blues… this guy is so locked in.
So I did a deep dive on his playing, and here’s what surprised me. A lot of his best licks are built on just three chords.
In this week’s lesson, I’m breaking down three of them note for note.
First up is a funk lick with a cool chromatic roll. It’s perfect for breaking up a groove.
Then we’ll learn a bluesy turnaround with these beautiful inner voices moving underneath. This is one of my all time favorite licks. I use it everywhere.
And the last one is a waterfall lick where David cascades down each chord. Fair warning, it’s such a showstopper that you’ll want to save it for the end of your solo.
Once you see how simple the chords behind these licks are, you’ll be amazed at how fast you can start using them in your own playing.
